Poco General FAQ - Archiving old mail

Q: I have about 15,000 messages spread over a bunch of mailboxes. My mail directory is located on a shared server directory so the mail is accessible from any workstation on my network. This works great -- but because Poco loads up all the mail folders on startup, it's also getting a bit slow.

I'd like to archive a lot of these messages but still have them easily available for browsing from time to time.

I am evaluating Mailbag Assistant, but I really would like to keep the messages in Poco's folders and not in a Mailbag Assistant archive file.

How are others here managing large quantities of mail? Any good ideas or suggestions?

A: Move your appropriate mailboxes to another location. Poco will not load them anymore. And MA will not convert them, so they will stay intact for any future import and use in Pocomail.

Following up on and expanding Tomas's suggestion, consider running the "Archive Old Mail" script (or modifying it if it doesn't meet your specific requirements) and then move the mailboxes "off-line". What I mean by this is move them out of the Poco mailbox path. Make sure you retain a valid mailbox structure in the directories you create for the archive. When you want to view the archives use the "Switch to Backed Up..." selection from the "Backup and Restore" item on the "EMail" menu.

Caution: I have not tried this and strongly advise backing up everything before you test it.
