Poco Security FAQ - Poco and Viruses

Q: When you launch POCO it automaticly opens the last message of a mailbox, regarless if this message has been viewed or not . If this message holds a virus or what ever you're done. Is there a way to prevent this?

A: In order to get infected by a virus you have to execute the code of that virus. Computer viruses are not like human viruses which simply being exposed to is sufficient for infection, the program code of the virus must run on your computer in order for the computer to be infected. Poco will not automatically run any attachment nor will it execute JavaScript code that can be imbedded in messages. This is the first line of defense provided by Poco. The next line is having Poco run a virus scanner against incoming attachments. This is done on the "Scan incoming files for viruses" section in the "Automation" section of the "Options" form.

My illusion to JavaScript above is in regard to the recently reported "Wiretap" vulnerability of several email clients. Poco is both immune from this vulnerability and will not propogate it (some email programs even though immune from the vulerability will unwittingly forward the JavaScript hack when the message is replied to or forwarded).
