Poco General FAQ - Backing up your Poco settings

Q: What are the critical files in Poco and how do I backup them up?

A: Poco does not rely on the registry but rather saves it's key information in several files in the main Poco directory and below. The main poco setting file can become corrupt if windows crashes when poco is writing it to disk or if the file happens to be written to a bad sector on the disk. The critical files are:
  • Accounts.ini
  • Filters.ini
  • Poco.ini
  • Pocobot.ini
  • mail.ini from the mail folder
Other important (but not critical) files include:
  • All the .ini files in your address folder (these are your address books),
  • All script (.poc) files from your scripts folder,
  • All template files (.txt) from your templates folder.
In addition some scripts may use other files so I also recommend backing up:
  • All .txt files in your mail folder

You can back these up manually or download the PocoBackup script from the registered users area of the PocoMail website. To run this script:

  1. Insert a blank diskette into your "A" drive
  2. Launch Poco
  3. Open the "Scripts" window by pressing F9 or by selecting "Scripts..." from the "Tools" menu.
  4. Press the "Edit Script" tab
  5. Select "PocoBackup" in the "Script name" box
  6. Press the "Debug run" button.
Note: The PocoBackup script was written to backup the settings for a Poco 2.1 installation. The script has not yet been modified to backup all the files used by Poco 2.5 so you may want to copy those that weren't to the backup disk yourself.
