Poco Bugs and Workarounds FAQ - Help, Poco won't start!

Q: Help, Poco won't start!

A: The following is taken from Poco 2.1. This problem seems much less frequent in Poco 2.5. In fact, as of July 26, 2001 I had yet to hear of an instance of it. The directions below are written from a Poco 2.1 perspective, locations of the various options have changed in Poco 2.5 but have not been updated in this document.

I suspect your Poco.ini file got corrupted, possibly it got written to a bad sector on your disk. To fix this I recommend you rename the Poco.ini file and then rebuild it as best you can.

To rename the file open your main poco directory and locate the "poco.ini" file. Right click on the file and select "Rename" from the popup menu. Enter a new name for the file (such as "poco.inisave"), press enter. Now you should be able to start Poco but you will have lost a couple of things:

I haven't tried this so I'm not certain the following steps are correct:

  1. Your button assignments will have been lost. Fix them from the "Buttons" tab of the "Filters and Scripts" window (F4).
  2. If you had poco configured to play a sound when you receive new mail then that setting will need to be re-entered from the "Misc" tab of the "Options" window (F7).
  3. It is possible your address book names may have been lost (just the reference to them, not the contents). To fix them repeatedly select the "Create new" button from the "Address Books" tab of the "Options" window (F7). Each time select the next address book from the directory.
  4. If you had a virus scanner configured then you will need to re-enter the parameters from the "Automation" tab of the "Options" window (F7).
  5. If you had Poco configured to automatically backup your mailboxes then you will have to re-enter the parameters from the "Automation" tab of the "Options" window (F7).
  6. If you had customized any markings then re-enter their names on the "Marking" tab of the "Options" window (F7).
  7. If you had customized either the "Reply", "Forward" or "Bounce" headers then re-enter them from the "Quoting" tab of the "Options" window (F7).
Finally, review the settings in each tab of the "Options" window (F7) to make sure they are correct. You may be able to use NotePad to review some of the settings in the "Poco.inisave" file.

To avoid this problem in the future I recommend backing up your main poco files. To assist with this I wrote the "PocoBackup" script. It will backup your key poco files to diskette.
